Decoding CL31A107MQHNNNE: Why Such a Small Capacitor Matters
7/1/2026 3:17:44 AM
In an electronic engineer's Bill of Materials (BOM), a string of seemingly obscure characters often represents a precision component. CL31A107MQHNNNE, a surface-mount multilayer ceramic capacitor (MLCC) produced by Samsung Electro-Mechanics, is exactly such a presence. Though tiny in size, it plays an indispensable role in modern electronic devices.
Parameter Decoding: From Model to Specifications
By breaking down the model number, we can extract a wealth of information. "CL31" indicates its package size-1206 (imperial) or 3216 (metric), meaning 3.2mm in length and 1.6mm in width. "A" points to its application category, while "107" is the capacitance code, representing 100µF. "MQ" relates to the dielectric material-X5R, with an operating temperature range of -55°C to +85°C and a capacitance change of approximately ±15%. The suffix "6.3V" specifies its rated voltage, while "NNE" involves internal structure and packaging details.
To present its core characteristics more intuitively, here is a summary table:

Application and Selection Q&A
Q: Where is this capacitor primarily used?
A:With its 100µF high capacitance, it is commonly used for power rail decoupling and bypassing, providing stable local energy to chips such as CPUs, GPUs, or DDR memory, while filtering out power supply noise. It is widely deployed in space-constrained and power-sensitive consumer electronics, including smartphones, tablets, and SSDs.
Q: What potential risks should be considered during selection?
A: Pay close attention to the DC bias characteristic. For X5R dielectric MLCCs, the effective capacitance drops significantly when a DC voltage is applied. At the rated 6.3V, the actual capacitance may be much lower than the nominal 100µF-designers must refer to the voltage-capacitance curve provided by the manufacturer. Additionally, MLCCs are susceptible to cracking due to mechanical stress or thermal shock, so PCB assembly processes require careful attention to panel separation and soldering techniques.
Summary
The CL31A107MQHNNNE is a typical product of Samsung Electro-Mechanics' trend toward miniaturization and higher capacitance. It delivers capacitance previously only available from tantalum or aluminum electrolytic capacitors, all within a compact 1206 package, offering a cost-effective solution for designers. Understanding its characteristics and limitations is key to making the most of this "small-bodied, high-capacity" component.
