Safety Relay G1502S: A Core Component in Industrial Safety Systems
5/30/2025 2:38:05 AM
In the fields of industrial automation and equipment safety, the safety relay G1502S stands as a highly reliable and multifunctional safety control component, playing a pivotal role in safeguarding personnel and equipment. Developed by ifm electronic (IFM), a German company, this product is widely applied in high-risk scenarios such as machinery manufacturing, automotive production, and logistics automation, thanks to its stringent safety certification standards, flexible interface design, and intelligent monitoring capabilities, making it a key element in modern industrial safety architectures.1. Technical Architecture and Safety Certification System
The G1502S adopts a modular design philosophy, with its core structure comprising an electromagnetic drive unit, multi-channel contact groups, an intelligent monitoring circuit, and an LED status indication system. Operating within a voltage range of 19.2-30VDC, it supports a contact load capacity of 6A/250VAC or 24VDC, with a total current limit of 12A. The product has obtained an IP20 protection rating, enabling stable operation in a wide temperature range of -25°C to 55°C. Its enclosure is made of polyimide (PA) material, combining mechanical strength with flame-retardant properties.
In terms of safety certification, the G1502S meets IEC 61508 SIL3, EN ISO 13849-1 PLe, and EN 574 Typ IIIC standards, which require the product to possess the following characteristics:
Fault Redundancy Design: Utilizes a dual-channel input architecture, allowing it to maintain a safe state even if a single channel fails.
Self-Diagnostic Coverage: Employs an integrated monitoring circuit to detect faults such as contact welding and coil breaks in real-time, with a diagnostic coverage rate of ≥99%.
Safe Failure Fraction (SFF): Critical components have an SFF of ≥90%, ensuring high reliability in high-risk scenarios.
Mean Time to Dangerous Failure (MTTFd): Theoretical value reaches 122 years, significantly reducing maintenance frequency.
2. Core Functions and Industry Applications
1. Multi-Channel Safety Input Processing
The G1502S supports PNP-type safety sensor connections, with its input channels featuring cross-monitoring functionality to detect signal consistency in real-time. For example, in a die-casting machine protection system, when both a safety light curtain and an emergency stop button are triggered, the relay can cut off the main power supply within 70ms, preventing accidental mold closure.
2. Timing Control and Safe Output
The product offers adjustable shutdown delays ranging from 0.25 to 10 seconds, suitable for the following scenarios:
Conveyor Line Emergency Stop: Delayed release ensures complete material stoppage before power restoration.
Robot Collaboration: Delayed startup avoids sudden movements during human-robot interaction.
Its safe output contacts utilize a potential-free design, with a combination of 6 normally open (NO) contacts and 1 normally closed (NC) contact that can be flexibly configured to different control circuits.
3. Two-Hand Control and Emergency Stop Functions
Compliant with EN 574 Typ IIIC standards for two-hand control mode, the G1502S requires operators to press both buttons simultaneously and hold them for over 0.5 seconds to initiate equipment operation, effectively preventing single-hand misoperations. In pressing machine applications, the G1502S detects the timing consistency of two independent input channels to ensure that the safety circuit is only released when both hands are operated simultaneously.
3. Industry Practices and Typical Case Studies
1. Application in Automotive Welding Workshops
A joint-venture automaker deployed the G1502S in its welding robot workstations, achieving the following:
Connecting laser scanners and safety fences to cut off robot power within 0.1 seconds when personnel enter hazardous areas.
Controlling pneumatic fixtures through timed outputs to ensure complete workpiece positioning before release after welding.
This solution reduced equipment failure rates by 85% and annual downtime by 40 hours.
2. Upgrade of Food Packaging Lines
A dairy enterprise upgraded its packaging lines by replacing traditional relays with the G1502S, realizing:
Interlocking emergency stop buttons with safety doors to immediately halt conveyor belts upon any safety signal trigger.
Displaying fault codes on the HMI through output status monitoring, improving maintenance efficiency by 60%.
After the upgrade, the line's OEE (Overall Equipment Effectiveness) increased from 72% to 89%.
4. Technological Evolution and Future Trends
With the advancement of Industry 4.0, the G1502S is gradually evolving towards intelligence:
Predictive Maintenance: Monitoring contact wear through built-in sensors to provide early replacement warnings.
Network Communication: Supporting safety protocols such as PROFIsafe and CIP Safety for real-time data interaction with PLCs.
Energy Management: Maintaining a standby power consumption below 1W, compliant with EU ERP energy efficiency standards.
Conclusion
The safety relay G1502S has become a benchmark product in the industrial safety field due to its rigorous safety design, flexible functional expandability, and proven reliability. In the era of smart manufacturing, its technological iterations will further promote the deep integration of equipment safety and production efficiency, providing solid guarantees for the transformation towards Industry 4.0. For enterprises, choosing components that comply with international safety standards is not only a regulatory requirement but also a core strategy for enhancing competitiveness and mitigating risks.
