Samsung Electro-Mechanics CL31B106KAHNNNE: Decoding the Wisdom Behind the MLCC Part Number
7/22/2026 12:36:15 AM
In electronic design, multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) are among the most widely used passive components. As a major global manufacturer, Samsung Electro-Mechanics is renowned for its high capacitance density and reliability. The CL31B106KAHNNNE is an exceptionally popular model. With its 10µF/25V/X7R/1206 combination, it is extensively used in power filtering and decoupling applications. By deciphering this part number, one can precisely grasp the key selection parameters. Let's explore it through a decoding table and a Q&A.

From the table, this capacitor features a 10 µF capacitance and 25 V rating. The 1206 size balances solderability with high-density layout. The 10 µF capacitance effectively filters medium- and low-frequency ripple, commonly seen at the input and output of DC-DC converters. The X7R dielectric controls capacitance change from -55℃ to 125℃, ensuring stable circuit operation in extreme environments, suitable for industrial and automotive electronics. It is notable that MLCCs exhibit a DC bias effect-when a 25 V DC voltage is applied, the actual capacitance may drop to 30%~40% of the nominal value. Designers should consult the manufacturer's curves and retain sufficient margin. The thickness code H corresponds to a maximum of 1.8 mm, so PCB height restrictions must be checked.
Q: What specific circuits is the CL31B106KAHNNNE suitable for?
A: It is primarily used in power management, such as input and output filtering of DC-DC converters, decoupling at LDO input/output, energy storage capacitors for battery-powered devices, and power supply bypassing for operational amplifiers. Due to its 10 µF capacitance and 25 V rating, it is commonly found on 5 V, 12 V, and 24 V power rails. It performs excellently in both portable devices and automotive electronics. Note that for high-frequency decoupling, it should be paralleled with smaller-value capacitors.
Q: How to interpret the voltage code in the part number, and what should be selected if a 50 V product is needed?
A: The voltage code A stands for 25 V. Common Samsung Electro-Mechanics voltage codes include O for 16 V, B for 50 V, and C for 100 V. If a 50 V rating is required, you can replace the A with B, resulting in CL31B106KBHNNNE. However, you must verify whether the thickness and size are compatible, as higher voltage ratings may require a larger package or a thicker product. Always refer to the datasheet when selecting components.
Q: What are the advantages of X7R capacitors compared to Y5V capacitors?
A: X7R covers an operating temperature range from -55 to 125 degrees Celsius, with capacitance change less than ±15%. In contrast, Y5V is only suitable for -30 to 85 degrees Celsius, with changes possibly reaching +22%/-82%, resulting in poor stability. Therefore, the CL31B106KAHNNNE is more suitable for applications demanding high reliability, such as automotive electronics and industrial controls. Even though it may cost slightly more, it is well worthwhile.
In summary, the CL31B106KAHNNNE is a commonly used model for engineers. Decoding its part number reveals the complete parameters. By adeptly applying part-number rules in daily design, one can quickly select components and avoid the DC bias trap. Understand its characteristics, and you will eventually handle it with ease. May this capacitor help keep your circuits stable.
