GRM31CR60J227ME11L: Murata’s High‑Capacity MLCC Capacitor Explained
9/2/2026 6:34:32 PM
1. Product OverviewThe GRM31CR60J227ME11L is a general‑purpose multilayer ceramic chip capacitor (MLCC) from Murata Manufacturing, part of the GRM series. This model delivers a large capacitance of 220 μF in a 1206 package, making it excellent for power supply filtering and decoupling applications.
The part number encodes rich information: "GRM" stands for the general‑purpose ceramic capacitor series; "31" corresponds to the 1206 case size; "C" indicates an X5R temperature characteristic; "R6" denotes a rated voltage of 6.3 V; "0J" is an internal code; "227" means 22 × 10⁷ = 220 μF; "M" specifies a tolerance of ±20 %; "E11" is the electrode structure code; and the trailing "L" indicates tape‑and‑reel packaging with 2000 pieces per reel.

In addition, this capacitor features low loss characteristics, maintaining low losses in VHF, UHF, and microwave bands. Its low‑inductance design reduces the parasitic inductance (ESL) at high frequencies, and through material and configuration optimisation, it effectively suppresses audible noise that can occur during ceramic capacitor operation.
3. Technical Features
This product incorporates several reliability enhancements: anti‑flexure cracking design prevents short‑circuit failures due to cracking when the PCB bends; anti‑solder‑crack measures use metal terminals and lead structures to relieve stress from solder expansion and contraction.
Murata officially recommends voltage and temperature derating for capacitors, meaning that the continuous applied voltage in the operating circuit should be lower than the rated voltage. Capacitance measurement should be performed after heat treatment.
4. Application Fields
The GRM31CR60J227ME11L is suitable for consumer electronics, industrial equipment, mobile electronics, medical devices (GHTF Class A/B/C, excluding implantable devices), and automotive infotainment/comfort equipment. Typical applications include input/output filtering for DC‑DC converters, power decoupling for processors/FPGAs, and power management in portable devices that require high‑capacity filtering.
5. Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How does a 1206 package achieve 220 μF of capacitance?
A: This is made possible by Murata's advanced thin‑layer ceramic dielectric technology and multilayer stacking processes, which achieve an extremely high volumetric capacitance within a limited footprint.
Q: What are the limitations of the X5R temperature characteristic?
A: X5R is a Class 2 dielectric; its capacitance change is within ±15 % over the range of –55 °C to +85 °C. It is less stable than C0G/NP0, but offers much higher capacitance density, making it suitable for filtering applications where tight temperature accuracy is not critical.
Q: What should I pay attention to when using the 6.3 V rated voltage in practice?
A: Derating is recommended. For example, in 5 V or 3.3 V systems, keep the applied voltage within 50 %–80 % of the rated value. This helps maintain capacitance stability and extends the capacitor's service life.
Q: Is this model obsolete?
A: Some channels may list it as "end‑of‑life," but major distributors still have stock. It is advisable to check Murata's official product status notifications during design and to have alternative replacement options ready.
6. Conclusion
The GRM31CR60J227ME11L is a representative product of Murata's trend toward high‑capacitance MLCCs – delivering 220 μF in a compact 1206 package while integrating low loss, low ESL, noise suppression, and crack resistance. When designing with this component, focus on voltage derating, temperature characteristics, and soldering processes – these three key aspects will help you fully leverage its performance advantages and provide reliable filtering and decoupling for a variety of low‑voltage power systems.
