In-Depth Look at Murata GRM155R71H104KE14D: The “Core” of a 0402 X7R 100nF MLCC
8/14/2026 7:48:52 AM
In the world of electronic components, multilayer ceramic capacitors (MLCCs) are among the most fundamental and widely used passive devices. Murata, as a global leader in MLCCs, is renowned for its GRM series, which offers small footprints with high capacitance values. The GRM155R71H104KE14D is one of the most popular models in this series – a 0402‑package, 100nF, 50V X7R SMD capacitor.1. Key Specifications at a Glance

2. Part Number Decoding
Murata's part numbering itself is a compact technical datasheet. Let's break down GRM155R71H104KE14D:
GRM : Murata GRM series – standard multilayer ceramic capacitor.
155 : Size code – corresponds to 0402 package (1.0×0.5 mm).
R7 : Temperature characteristic X7R.
1H : Rated voltage 50V.
104 : Capacitance value – 10×10⁴ pF = 100nF.
K : Tolerance ±10%.
E14 : Internal code (electrode structure/material, etc.).
D : Packaging code – φ180 mm embossed tape, paper tape, 10,000 pcs/reel.
3. X7R Characteristics and Applications
X7R is a high‑dielectric‑constant ceramic material, with a capacitance change of no more than ±15% over the range of -55℃ to +125℃. This makes it ideal for power supply decoupling, smoothing, and bypass applications.
Typical use cases include:
Consumer electronics – smartphones, tablets, portable devices.
Industrial control – automation equipment, power modules.
Automotive electronics – infotainment systems, comfort electronics.
Communication equipment – RF matching networks, signal coupling.
4. Alternative Models and Selection Advice
Given the volatility of the MLCC market, knowing reliable alternatives is essential for both procurement and engineering.
Q1: Why is the GRM155R71H104KE14D so popular?
A: The 0402 package is one of the most mainstream SMD capacitor sizes; 100nF/50V is the "golden combination" for power decoupling; and X7R ensures wide‑temperature stability. Together, these three factors make it a "standard‑fit" component in almost all electronic products.
Q2: What are the differences between the GRM155R71H104KE14D and other suffixes (e.g., W, J, V)?
A: The suffix indicates different packaging styles:
D – φ180 mm paper tape (10,000 pcs/reel)
W – φ180 mm W8P1 paper tape (20,000 pcs/reel)
J – φ330 mm paper tape (50,000 pcs/reel)
V – φ330 mm W8P1 paper tape (100,000 pcs/reel)
The electrical performance is identical across all suffixes; only the packaging differs.
Q3: Is this capacitor recommended for new designs?
A: Some channels may mark it as "not recommended for new designs". For new projects, always check the latest lifecycle status on Murata's official website, or select a newer version with the same specifications.
Q4: What should I watch out for when purchasing?
A: Counterfeit MLCCs are common. We strongly advise sourcing through authorised distributors (e.g., DigiKey, Mouser, Farnell) or reputable independent stockists. Always verify the batch, production date, and MSL level upon receipt.
Closing Thoughts
Though tiny – weighing just 1.6 mg – the GRM155R71H104KE14D is like a capillary in modern electronic devices, essential and omnipresent. Understanding its specifications, characteristics, and replacement options is a fundamental skill for every hardware engineer, procurement professional, and component specialist. In an era of supply chain uncertainties and the push for localisation, deep knowledge of such basic components is more valuable than ever.
